Community to help fuel the search for the next STE(A)M Master with free hands-on workshop at Caltex Fuel Your School – Tech Jam 2017

SINGAPORE, August 30, 2017 – Caltex Singapore and Science Centre Singapore have announced the launch of Caltex Fuel Your School – Tech Jam 2017, an enrichment program which has Caltex pledging $2 for every eligible fuel purchase across its retail network, up to a maximum of $60,000, to help spark curiosity in coding and tinkering among school students island-wide come September 8-17.

The collaboration marks a new chapter for Caltex’s signature community program, which now leverages Science Centre Singapore’s award winning Tech Jam platform to make learning traditional science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) themes more accessible via free interactive workshops that bring theoretical knowledge to life through fun art and design applications. Participation is open to upper primary and lower secondary  students, with a target to engage 320 beneficiaries over four days.

Associate Prof Lim Tit Meng, Chief Executive, Science Centre Singapore said, “While STEM is critical in shaping the economy and creating employment opportunities, there is also the need to integrate music, visual and performing arts into the curriculum to better foster creative thinking. Through such learning opportunities, we hope to equip the younger generation with the necessary skills to lead the next wave of innovation, as well as enable them to continue benefitting from developing and living in a Smart Nation. As part of Science Centre Singapore’s 40th anniversary celebrations, we are pleased to partner Caltex Singapore and encourage more young minds to think creatively and cultivate a passion for innovation.”

According to Mr. Shahid Ahmed, Chevron’s general manager of products for Singapore, Caltex is pleased to support education and offer motorists a convenient way to help drive learning in their community: “Thanks to the support of our community partners, Caltex Fuel Your School is now able to expand the impact of hands-on science based activities with art to foster talent and inspire future Makers to consider technical careers in a new light. We’re looking forward to community participation to support this journey.”

Following the September funding period involving Caltex service stations across Singapore, selected students will be invited to participate in coding workshops on Oct 10-13, where they will get to tinker with basic electronics, learn coding with block script-based programming, and interface with hardware programs. For the first time, best-performing students will also be invited back for a two-week research experience program with Science Centre mentors to hone their budding interest in the field. The acronym STE(A)M refers to integrating elements of the arts into traditional STEM subjects.

In appreciation of community support, a separate open weekend session will be held on Oct 14-15 for members of the public catering to kids of all ages. Presentation of a recent Caltex fuel transaction receipt along with a Plus! Card allows priority access to these open sessions on a first come, first served basis and a 20 percent discount on admission to Science Centre Singapore only* from now to 31 December 2017.

Chevron Singapore Pte Limited markets the Caltex retail brand locally. The signature Caltex Fuel Your School program is part of Chevron’s overall support to education, which has totalled over $300 million worldwide since 2013. For more information on the program, visit www.caltex.com.sg.
